A sudden stall is unnerving, especially in traffic. Here's the calm, correct order of steps to follow.
A car stalling without warning is one of the more alarming things that can happen while driving, particularly on a fast road. Even without power steering or brake assist, the car can still be steered and stopped — it just takes more effort.
What to Do
- Keep steering firmly toward the shoulder or nearest safe spot — don't panic-brake
- Try restarting once you're safely stopped, but don't assume a successful restart means the problem is solved
- Switch on hazard lights immediately so following traffic sees you
- Call for roadside assistance rather than attempting a diagnosis on a live road
Common causes range from a flat battery or alternator fault to a fuel delivery issue or overheating. Trying to self-diagnose on the roadside rarely helps — getting the car towed to a proper diagnostic bay is faster and safer.
