Windshield Repair vs Replacement: How to Know Which You Need
A chip smaller than a dirham coin and a crack shorter than about 15 cm can usually be repaired, provided the damage hasn't reached the edge of the glass, hasn't penetrated both layers of the laminate, and isn't directly in the driver's primary line of sight. If any of those conditions apply, replacement is the safer and more reliable option. Multiple chips close together also weaken the glass enough to warrant replacement. What Is ADAS Calibration and Why Does It Matter After a Windshield Change
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Many modern cars have a forward-facing camera mounted behind the rearview mirror on the windshield. This camera powers features like lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. When the windshield is replaced, the camera's position and angle change slightly because the new glass sits differently. Even a fraction of a degree off can cause the system to misread lane markings or misjudge distances. Recalibration uses a target pattern placed in front of the car to re-teach the camera its correct field of view. We check the size, location, and type of damage. Chips smaller than a coin and cracks shorter than about 15 cm can usually be repaired with resin injection, as long as the damage hasn't reached the edge of the glass or the inner layer. If the chip or crack is in the driver's direct line of sight, replacement is often the safer option because even a good repair can leave a slight distortion.
Repair or Replace
For repairable chips, we inject a clear resin into the damaged area, cure it with UV light, and polish the surface smooth. The repair stops the damage from spreading and restores most of the glass's original strength. For replacements, we remove the old windshield, clean and prep the frame, apply fresh adhesive, and fit the new glass. We use OEM-spec or genuine glass that matches the original in thickness, tint, and acoustic properties.
Seal, Calibrate, and Test
After a replacement, we check the seal around the entire glass for leaks and proper bonding.
