A stuck key is usually a small mechanical issue, not a broken car. Here's what's likely going on and what not to try.
A key that won't turn or won't come out is more annoying than dangerous, but forcing it is the fastest way to turn a simple fix into a broken ignition cylinder.
Common Causes
- The gear selector isn't fully in Park (or Neutral on a manual) — most cars won't release the key otherwise
- The steering wheel lock has engaged and is putting pressure on the cylinder
- A worn ignition cylinder or a key that's degraded over years of use
- Dust and grit inside the cylinder, especially common in Dubai's dusty conditions
Try gently wiggling the steering wheel left and right while turning the key — that releases the steering lock in most cases. If it's still stuck, stop forcing it and call for help rather than risk snapping the key off inside the cylinder.
Our technicians carry ignition cylinder parts for most common makes and can usually resolve this on-site without towing the car in.
