Gearbox & Transmission Repair In Dubai
Shifting Problems Don't Fix Themselves
A gearbox problem rarely shows up all at once. It starts with a slight delay when shifting, a faint whine at certain speeds, or a jerk that wasn't there a month ago. Most drivers adapt to it without realizing they're compensating for a transmission that's gradually failing. By the time the symptoms become obvious, the internal damage is usually further along than expected. At Sunshine Auto in Al Qusais, we diagnose and repair manual and automatic transmissions across all major car brands. We check what's actually happening inside the gearbox before recommending any work, because a fluid change and a full rebuild are very different jobs at very different costs.

What Dubai Drivers Should Know
Gearbox and Transmission Facts for UAE Driving Conditions
Why Gearboxes Fail Faster in Dubai
Three factors make Dubai particularly hard on transmissions. First, heat. Transmission fluid breaks down faster at high temperatures, and a gearbox running in 50-degree ambient heat with the AC compressor adding engine load operates well above the temperature range it was designed for. Second, stop-and-go traffic. Frequent gear changes in heavy traffic put constant stress on clutch packs and bands inside automatic transmissions. Third, driving habits. Many UAE drivers regularly tow, carry heavy loads, or drive aggressively in sport mode, all of which accelerate internal wear. The result is that transmissions designed to last 200,000 km in moderate climates often develop issues at 120,000 to 150,000 km here.
Automatic vs Manual Gearbox: What Fails Differently
Automatic transmissions fail through worn clutch packs, degraded valve bodies, failing solenoids, and torque converter problems. The symptoms are slipping, harsh shifts, or delayed engagement. Manual gearboxes fail through worn synchros, damaged bearings, and clutch disc wear. The symptoms are grinding when shifting, difficulty getting into gear, or a noisy gearbox in neutral. Both types share one common cause of premature failure: neglected fluid changes. Transmission fluid is not a lifetime fill, regardless of what any manufacturer claims.
How Often Should You Change Transmission Fluid?
For automatic transmissions in Dubai, every 40,000 to 60,000 km or every two years, whichever comes first. For manual gearboxes, every 60,000 to 80,000 km. If you tow, drive in heavy traffic daily, or use sport mode frequently, move to the lower end of those intervals. "Lifetime" transmission fluid is a marketing term. The fluid degrades, collects metal particles, and loses its ability to protect internal components. A fluid change at 60,000 km costs a fraction of the rebuild you'll need at 150,000 km if you skip it.
What a Slipping Transmission Actually Means
When your transmission slips, the engine revs go up but the car doesn't accelerate proportionally. It feels like the gearbox momentarily loses its grip. In an automatic, this usually means the clutch packs or bands inside the transmission are worn and can no longer hold under load. In a manual, it typically means the clutch disc is worn thin. Slipping generates heat, and heat accelerates the damage. If your gearbox is slipping, driving on it makes the eventual repair more expensive with every trip.
CVT Problems: What Makes Them Different
CVTs don't have traditional gears. They use a belt or chain running between two variable-width pulleys to provide seamless ratio changes. Common CVT problems include belt slippage (the car shudders or hesitates during acceleration), overheating (the transmission goes into limp mode), and premature wear from aggressive driving. CVTs are sensitive to fluid type and condition. Using the wrong fluid or running on degraded fluid causes accelerated belt and pulley wear. We service CVTs with manufacturer-specified fluid and reset the transmission adaptation values after every fluid change.
Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT / DSG) Issues to Watch For
Dual-clutch transmissions, found in Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Hyundai, and Kia models among others, use two separate clutches for odd and even gears. They shift faster than a conventional automatic but are more complex mechanically. Common issues include shuddering at low speeds (worn clutch packs), mechatronic unit faults (the electronic brain of the gearbox), and jerky shifts in stop-and-go traffic. DCTs need their fluid changed at specific intervals, and the clutch adaptation values should be reset by a technician who understands the system. We handle DSG and DCT service and repair for all common makes.

Tell Us What Your Gearbox Is Doing, We'll Tell You What It Needs
Send us your car's make, model, year, and a description of the issue. Slipping, jerking, noise, warning light, anything. We'll reply with what to expect and an estimated timeline.
How We Perform The Service
Diagnostic Scan and Road Test
We start by reading the transmission control module for fault codes, then take the car on a controlled road test. We're checking shift timing, engagement quality, unusual noises, and how the gearbox responds under load. This tells us whether the issue is electronic, hydraulic, or mechanical.
Fluid and Visual Inspection
We check the transmission fluid for colour, smell, and contamination. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid with metal particles tells a very different story than clean fluid with a slow leak. We also inspect external components: mounts, linkage, wiring, and the transmission pan for leaks or damage.
Internal Diagnosis (If Needed)
If the scan and fluid check point to an internal fault, we remove the valve body or drop the transmission to inspect clutch packs, bands, bearings, and gears. We photograph everything and walk you through what we find before doing any further work.
Repair, Reassemble, and Test
We replace only what's failed or worn past tolerance. New seals, gaskets, and fresh fluid go in with every job. After reassembly, we run a full road test across multiple driving conditions to confirm the shifts are clean, the noise is gone, and the gearbox holds under load.

Built Around Getting It Right
We Diagnose Before We Quote
Gearbox repair is one of the most commonly misquoted jobs in any workshop. A transmission that slips could need a fluid change, a solenoid, or a full rebuild. The price difference between those jobs is thousands of dirhams. We find out which one it actually is before we give you a number.
We Repair Where Others Replace
Many workshops quote a full gearbox replacement because it's simpler than diagnosing the actual fault. We take the time to isolate the failed component and repair or replace only that part. If a rebuild is genuinely needed, we'll tell you, but we don't jump to the most expensive option first.
Manual and Automatic, Standard and Specialist
We work on conventional automatic transmissions, manual gearboxes, CVTs, and dual-clutch systems. Whether it's a Nissan Patrol's 7-speed automatic or a Volkswagen Golf's DSG, we have the tools, parts access, and experience to handle it.
Road-Tested Before Handover
No gearbox leaves our workshop without a full road test under real driving conditions. We test shifts at low speed, highway speed, under acceleration, and during deceleration. If anything feels off, it goes back on the lift.
